BUSD Sends Its Condolences to The Covenant School Community

Message from Superintendent Deanna Swearingen regarding the school shooting in Nashville, Tennessee.

Dear BUSD Families,

A tragic shooting occurred at The Covenant School in Nashville, Tennessee. The school’s leader, a substitute teacher, a custodian and three 9-year-old students were killed.

BUSD sends its condolences and sympathy to the families of the loved ones lost in this tragedy.  As a mark of respect for the victims, all flags at District schools and buildings will be flown at half-staff until sunset Friday, March 31.

This event reminds us of how important it is for each of us to be always vigilant and fully aware of our surroundings. It is imperative that this is our practice every day. Encourage your children to report any concern to a teacher or school employee regarding any threat of violence regardless of how trivial it may seem.

I know you share the same feelings I do when I say it is truly senseless that our nation must endure yet another tragedy as what transpired at The Covenant School. As you know, the emotional effects of a traumatic event of this magnitude can directly impact our students. The National Association of School Psychologists notes there are effective ways to help students cope with such tragic events. You can find resources at the following link:

CHS Students Attend Science & Technology Workshop at Disneyland

A group of 27 of Central High School's top credit earners were recently given an opportunity to attend Disney's Imagination Campus: Science and Technology Workshop at Disneyland Park. During the all-day event, students learned about how Disneyland Imagineers dream, design and use technology to enhance the guest experience. "These students earned this privilege by completing at least 50 credits this school year, with 17 of the attendees earning more than 70 credits or having met their graduation requirements," CHS Principal Rafael Navarro said.

CHS students created their own light and firework shows using the latest computer programming technology and got a behind-the-scenes sneak peek of how the Star Wars attraction, Millennium Falcon: Smuggler's Run, operates. Afterward, CHS students explored the rest of the park on their own, where they got to enjoy the opportunity of making their own memories. "Great job, Centurions," Navarro said. "You make Central High School proud."
