Skyline North's Team Blue Horizon Wins Solve CC Challenge
Marseilles Chavez

Congratulations to Skyline North Elementary School's Team Blue Horizon for their First Place finish in the Solve Community Challenges competition. The group of 5th and 6th grade students used surveys of community members and in-person discussions with local business owners and community leaders to determine that homelessness is the biggest issue in Barstow. You can view Blue Horizon's presentation video here. The team came up with ways to help solve the homelessness issue in our community:

1. Provide portable bath and shower facilities.

2. Offer work or business attire for job interviews or opportunities.

3. Provide an educational environment for resume writing and development of people skills.

4. Provide job opportunities.

5. After job hiring, create affordable housing opportunities.

"We look forward to implementing our plans to strengthen our community," Team Advisor Jason Dokie said. "Thank you to everyone that supported another opportunity for the students to become incredible leaders in our community.

"A huge shoutout to Barstow Community College President Dr. Eva Bagg and all the faculty for putting on an incredible experience for putting on an incredible experience for all in attendance."

And the team won the competition on Mr. Dokie's birthday, then sang "Happy Birthday" and everyone enjoyed birthday cupcakes!

BHS Vandalism
Marseilles Chavez

BUSD Families,

The Barstow High School campus was vandalized overnight. Staff and school equipment were
damaged, along with defacing of school property. An investigation is underway to determine
who was involved. We are deeply troubled by this criminal act against our school. If this act of
vandalism is in any way associated with pranks to end the school year, full consequences
associated with California Education Code will be enforced.

We are also asking our neighbors who live in neighborhoods around Barstow High School to
check their home security videos between the hours of midnight and 1 a.m. Wednesday morning
to help us identify those responsible for the vandalism.

If you heard or saw something suspicious in the neighborhood around Barstow High School
Tuesday night or Wednesday morning, we ask you to report it to the Barstow Police Department
or WeTip.com.

We thank you for your assistance in this matter.
